CO-OP 0215 -- Making Camp -- SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny, Mario & Luigi, Motorstorm PSP

Camping. It’s cheap, easy, and thanks to the DS and the PSP we can bring our games with us! It’s an all-portables week as we go primal. Well, primal for us, being the technology-urban dependents we are.

One of the benefits to living in San Francisco is the ease with which one can be out into the wilderness, partaking of the state of California’s wonderful parks system. Fortunately, even with a lack of power outlets we are not gaming-deprived! After camp is set, it’s time to start up the blowtorch, PSPs, and DSs. One of those three doesn’t require a battery for the fun.

Jason and Ryan are two of the biggest SoulCalibur aficionados to ever hold a PSP. It has long been Ryan’s dream to take his favorite fighter on the go and Jason seems to agree that this portable installment of the venerable franchise is everything the fan could have hoped for. SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny definitely measures up.

Thanks be to JayFresh, for without him Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story may not have received its due on CO-OP. Ryan poses a bit of skepticism to Fresh about the game, but Fresh is able to hold his own as he details the unique quirks that make this one a keeper.

Motorstorm: Arctic Edge, much like Broken Destiny, is very much like bringing it’s big brother with you. A hallmark of graphic fidelity on the PS3, the Motostorm Franchise has done a fantastic job of thrilling the pants of the Area 5 crew. Matt and Ryan have been fans since day one and the opportunity to bring the game with was a no-brainer. Ryan’s convinced it equals its nearest relatives in both scope and fun.

Matt, it's the state's park system, not the nation's. China is a state. Just an fyi.

I mean "a" fyi.

Yes, "Schambeau," if that is your real name--which it isn't. Well, I guess it's part of it, anyway. Part of your real name. Your full name, maybe. Anyway, thank you for the correction. I intended that to mean something along the lines of the parks systems that we have in this nation, not a determinate between the state and nation parks systems--but I worded it badly. So I'll go back and change it now. I HAVE THE POWER!

I like the show, but I gotta say I'm really disappointed with how little attention you guys give games on the Wii and DS. Mario & Luigi deserved way more then Jay talking for a little more then seven minutes while Ryan nodded apathetically.

There are a ton of great games on Wii and DS this show really should look into, if for no other reason then to bring a bit of balance to the massive piles of PS3 and 360 games you guys talk about.

Just a suggestion.

September 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMike

awesome show guys. I hope you guys actually did some camping things, not just played games all day:P. And, of course, drank a lot at night, cause that is what camping is really about.

Please cover scriblenauts!!!

September 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRodriguez

Great show guys. I really like how you used the camping narrative to cover portable games. Now maybe Professor Layton can get some love.

September 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJohn S

Really funny show, especially the casual campfire stuff. You guys are naturally funny; you should do more non-scripted stuff -- like the part with the nachos, which had me cracking up.

This episode came pretty close to convincing me to get a PSP.

Subsequently, I shall never watch this again because I am shit broke, weak in willpower, and can't afford to go into debt over a handheld.

September 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRyan Perez

Great episode as usual - but Ryan, stop dominating the talks! I'm interested to hear what others have to say :(

September 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTrent

Good show guys. The narratives/themes of the last two shows have been great.

@Mike I thought the show did a good job of representing Mario and Luigi. Not at all my sort of game, but the mechanics look really cleverly designed and the editing did a great job of illustrating it. They can't talk about games if they haven't played them.

Hey Guys,
I love your Show, every week I look forward to Tuesday.
It would be great if you cover DS Games for older people.
(sorry for my bad English, I am from Germany.)

September 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMartin

@Rodriguez ... I'd watch next week's show :)

@Ryan Heffernan ... We actaully did quite a bit of camping stuff--including smores, and, yes, drinking! It was a great way to do the whole show in one event and I hope we get to do more stuff like that in the future.

@Ryan Perez ... I feel you on the whole being broke thing, my friend. How about we agree that if I win the lottery I'll buy you a PSP and if you win the lottery you'll fund our company for year ;)

@Mike ... If we had the staff/money/time to do an hour show, then we'd undoubtedly cover more of *everything*--and it's not just the Wii and DS that are missing out. I get emails about the PC games were not covering, indie titles were not covering on every platform they're available on, Flash games we're not covering, Facebook games we're not covering, iPhone games we're not covering, etc. Our process is pretty straightforward in that we only cover a game if one of the Area 5 crew have played it and given that we have to have new games on the show every week you can see how we have to move through titles fast and pick the ones that are of genuine interest to us or that we think deserve to be of broader interest than they are receiving. Anyway, I'm not saying your wrong, I'm just saying that we don't discriminate based on platform, only on what we're able to play and get guests on the show for.

@Martin ... Your English looks good to me! Any DS games for older people that you can suggest we take a look at?

@Trent ... I think that was just a by-product of the situation surrounding this week's show. Given that we didn't have any guests on it was mostly one of the Area 5 guys telling another of the Area 5 guys about a game they should check out. It's not as in-depth as we normally go during our regular chats and Ryan ended up being in all three.

Another great show. I look forward to it every Tuesday. I wish there was a way of getting more of the internet's attention on you. I try to mention the show on forums, etc. when it's relevant. Anyway, what about a "Whatcha been play'n?" section or something like that. I know the games you showcase are obviously some of the games you've been playing, but I'd be interested in the other stuff you're trying out, even if it were just a quick list at the end or something. Thanks again. You're giving aspiring get paid to write and talk about games people (me) some hope in a tough, not to mention competitive, market.

Jason makes teh best characterz evur! :D

September 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSune

@Robert H. ... Not a bad idea, man, and I wish we had the time to throw in another segment like that, but we can't do anything unless it's edited to the nines and top-shelf content, so that would mean we'd really need another person working full-time on an additional segment every week. That and we really don't have time to play more than we play for the show. I mean, we DO, but not much more time so it would be hard to find enough content for that segment every week. Anyway, once we've got some money coming in and don't have to focus so much on contract work to keep the lights on, maybe we'll have some more time get some equipment for interns and what not and we'll make them edit that segment ;)

@Sune ... Yes, yes he does. And does Rob. And JayFresh. Basically they all do! :)

October 1, 2009 | Registered Commentermatt chandronait

I believe Sune was referring to Jason's Soulcalibur character creation skills, Matt. And he's right; Jason's got a knack for that sort of thing.

October 1, 2009 | Registered Commenterryan o'donnell

well, I feel kind of torn this week again.... I mean, sure, the narrative sections are kind of fun, but I feel like the silliness of them this time was overpowering. Sure, geeks out in the woods, they "don't know what they're doing, lol", but... you guys and the show are interesting without those sections... well, there wasn't a lot of that, but at the same time, when you do stuff that's not "overwritten", like the nacho thing or the "GIVE HIM THE STICK DOOONT GIVE HIM THE STICK" thing, those parts are very enjoyable. I guess what I'm still suggesting is go easy on the overacted parts and just be yourselves, it makes the show very enjoyable. Also, outside wtf. Who goes outside anymore???

Hey guys! Great Show!

Two words: Gyrating Hulk! @ 3:48

I somewhat agree with Mike from the comments. Some more face time with Wii & DS content would be awesome! I found that your coverage on M&L3 was more than adequate with plenty explanation of the high & low points of your experience so far.

The camping idea was great! I do something similar with my friends, although there is a bit more craziness involved before we play actual games. May I present Geeks with Guns:

http://www.youtube.com/user/Brickfisted#play/uploads/4/Yd_sag16_O4

Keep in mind this a controlled field, the guns have permits and no little fuzzy creatures were harmed in the making of this goofiness. We don't believe in using guns as weapons. We just like to use them to demolish old beat up electronics and stuff. Oh ya and I'm the goofy guy with the glasses.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Hey guys, thanks for the great show this week. One question though: what was that acoustic song at the very beginning of the show? "What if life was more like a video game", was that performed by one of you? It sounded pretty fucking awesome, is there any way I can get a download of it?

October 3, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterZeroCool2390

awesome show guys and I second zerocool's question that song was pretty epic and it's been driving me crazy looking for it everywhere. I'd love to get download of it.

October 3, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdennis

It's from the same guy who does the theme for the "Angry Video Game Nerd" I think. Or it at least sounds like him.

October 3, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBigska

Awesome show guys, keep it up!

One comment though, since the late days of the 1UP show the show feels more scripted (I don't know if it is or not, it just seems to give off that vibe). If it is, stay away from it! The cool thing about the show is that its a bunch of guys that like talking about video games, not a bunch written reviews read to a camera. Don't take it as a bashing, just some constructive criticism :)

I'm not sure if anyone has asked this before, but the music in the show is really cool is there anywhere it can be downloaded?

I bought Soulcalibur for the 360 because of this week's show and the recent Dreamcast retrospective. (Which was my last Soulcalibur purchase.) I also bought Shadow Complex thanks to your recommendations, and today I got Batman: Arkham Asylum which I was pointed towards thanks to CO-OP.

I know the chance of any sponsors/advertisers reading this are slim, but CO-OP does help me decide what is worth spending money on. Just saying.
